In the characteristic Piazza San Nicola, the monumental Church of San Michele Arcangelo

Built between 1698 and 1719 in part on a pre-existing church of San Nicola, it was designed by Domenico Antonio Vaccaro and other famous artists lent their work to it, thanks to the economic contribution of the bishop of the time and of noble families.

067A6321In the church you can admire valuable works dated 1719 and mostly signed by Paolo De Matteis, as well as paintings by Francesco Solimena and Giacomo delPo. The most amazing work is the finely decorated majolica floor, which represents “Adam and Eve driven out from the earthly Paradise” and is signed by the master Leonardo Chiaiese, whose signature is present in a corner of the work. It can be admired from above, going up through a spiral staircase.
