Unmistakable for its Pompeian red color, the building is also distinguished by the mullioned windows and battlements, witnesses of a contamination of nineteenth-century styles. It incorporates a sixteenth-century Aragonese tower with a square plan and, inside, it has the characteristic porticoed courtyard. It was built by American Civil War general John Clay H. Mac Kowen, who landed on Capri and remained there for twenty-three years. The Red House hosts a permanent exhibition of paintings by Italian and foreign masters and since 2008 also the three Roman statues found in 1964 and 1974 in the Blue Grotto.
